10 June to 30 July 2005 This electronic conference is part of a consultative process that include the review of the main factors affecting the natural resources and livestock development in CIS countries and Mongolia from a technical, economic and policy perspective. The results of this electronic conference will be fed into a face-to face workshop that will take a place in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic , on August 15-17 and 18-19, 2005. The objective of this electronic conference is to outline the current state on natural resources and land degradation; identify the main causes of grassland degradation and to discuss the current and future trends and opportunities for pastoral systems with the experts from the region. The goal is to be able to produce a document which formulates guidelines for the implementation of livestock projects that can effectively address the social, environmental and pastoral issues; the needs of research and development institutions and the policy framework. |

4 November to 31 January 2003 This electronic conference is part of a consultation process that confront several points of view (breeders, technicians, economists, researchers, non-governmental organisations, decision makers) around one of four major themes approached on the LEAD francophone platform: Pastoralism and dry regions. The mission of this conference is to produce a document that will not only be a rich source of information, but will also define courses of action and create new research areas on livestock and environment interactions in the political and practical extensive breeding in the arid region of the Sahel. The main themes for discussion are pastoralism and protected areas; current trends regarding the interactions between pastoralism and agricultural: the effects on pastoral societies; degradation and restoration: rangeland rehabilitation in semi- arid and arid zones: fiction or reality? and; perception of risks and risk management by pastors: how to improve conceptions and aid intervention? 22 October - 23 November 2001 This electronic conference focusses on analyzing biophysical, socioeconomical and regulatory aspects for the generation of knowledge and future development of payment for environmental services in tropical livestock production systems. The main themes of the discussion are: carbon sequestration and market mechanisms in silvopastoral systems; knowledge of the types of biodiversity conservation in silvopastoral systems; risk analysis of inducing more deforestation by payment of services; reactions from large or small producers regarding the payment mechanism for environmental services and policy and management of payments for environmental services. 18 June to 3 August 2000 This Electronic Conference is part of a consultative process which includes a review of the experiences made in various countries from a technical, economic and policy perspective. The results of this electronic conference were used to draft guidelines for Area Wide Integration. The goal it to produce a document which formulates guidelines for the implementation of Area Wide Integration in a way that effectively assists decision-makers in optimizing the siting of animal production from an environmental, public health and social perspective. |

10 March to 24 May 1997 This conference, as part of the first phase of the LEAD Initiative identified, at a global scale, the consequences of increased pressure on grazing and mixed farming systems and the dangers of the shift to industrial modes of production. It highlighted the close interaction between government policies and the environmental impact of livestock production, and showed the large number of technologies, which are available to mitigate the negative effects in all different production modes, provided the appropriate policy framework is in place. |
